Moving Away Your Dust:
Ernest Boots Tackles Westminster's Waste Crisis in 1894 AKA "What A Horse and Cart!"
Dir. Tom Hillenbrand
Three months in the making, this short film with the snappy title 'Moving Away Your Dust: Ernest Boots Tackles Westminster's Waste Crisis in 1894, AKA "What a Horse and Cart!"', combines stop motion animation, glove puppetry and live action. It’s a humorous take on the challenges that faced street cleaners in London at the turn of the 19th Century, specifically the high numbers of horses on the streets and what they left behind them. Warning: this film contains toilet humour. Having co-written the script with Peter Daniel (Education and Interpretation Officer at The City of Westminster Archives, who was instrumental in putting the bid for the project together and invited me to get involved) I made the puppets and props, along with a 3D printed horse (thanks to Chris Richards), which I then took to College Park Special School in London, to work with the students there to film the stop motion animation. They were very welcoming, as usual, and it was great to work with the school again. I also provided all of the voices of the characters within the film, edited the video and wrote the incidental music, with a slight nod to the theme from Steptoe and Son. The song at the end of the film, about Ernest Boots, our hero, was written and performed by @Vincent Burke. Commissioned by Westminster City Council Archives and The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the film was funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery Players. Wart Are You Looking At?: An Argument Between the Statue of Cromwell & The Bust of Charles I in Westminster
Outside the Palace of Westminster in London, stands the statue of Oliver Cromwell. Directly opposite, stands St. Margaret's Church and above the back doorway is housed a bust of King Charles I. Cromwell, when in charge of England during the English Civil War (1642-1651), decreed that Charles' head be chopped off. Now that they stare at each other for eternity, the time has come for them to have a measured discussion about how that decision came to pass. Commissioned by CRAY (Crayford Reminiscence And Youth) and Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, the film was animated by young people from CRAY at Westminster Abbey Education Centre, as well as young pupils from College Park, Federation of Westminster Special Schools & Bi-borough Inclusion Service. An excerpt from this film as well as two further animations as part of the project The Vindicaton of Christmas can be found here, along with further resources: https://www.crayfordhistory.org.uk/new-contributions/digital-works-cray-documentary-the-vindication-of-christmas https://www.crayfordhistory.org.uk/category/projects/the-vindication-of-christmas For previous projects please visit: https://www.crayfordhistory.org.uk
